I am looking to get a new 3 wood. I currently have an left handed XR 3 wood with a stuff Projext X shaft but I have a love/hate relationship with it. Love the Alpha 816 but seems like everyone (Pros included) go with the Epic. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
I had a similar love/hate relationship with my 3 wood. I ended up replacing it with a 4 wood (Callaway XR). Much easier to control, better in the rough, and minimal distance loss (<10 yards) vs the 3 wood. Did a similiar thing with my 5 wood -- replacing it with a 7 wood (Callaway XR). Even a better decision !!
I replaced my 3 wood almost 2 months ago and upgraded to the Epic 3 wood, I absolutely love it. Go hit one if you haven't yet. I also love the Steelhead 3 wood so give that one a shot as well as I've heard great things about that one as well. Plus it's a little cheaper than the Epic. Either one of those should be right up your alley!
@NicholasV913b He's a lefty so a 'store bought' 4W is out.
@JNG256 I faced the same problem last year. I was gaming a Ping G10 4W which I loved, but thought I needed a real 3W. However I did not want to give up on a 4W.
My solution was the 816 3W. I can leave it as a 3W if I need it or if the course requires a 4W vice a 3W I'll crank up the hosel 2 degrees and have a strong 4.
I end up leaving it as a strong 4 most of the time and never miss the distance.
@JNG256 I replaced my 3 wood a few weeks ago with the EPIC 3 wood. I've played around with the settings and have finally settled on the loft and lie settings. I'm hitting it longer and with more control than any previous 3 woods that I've owned. The EPIC is a bit more $ than the Steelhead XR, but for me the adjustability was the deciding factor.
I suggest you try both at a retailer and see which is best for you.
I have a 815 3w and eventhough I changed my other clubs to the Xr's I couldnt bring myself to change from my "go to" when I need consistancy. I use it like others who have responded to you post, but I really only have 2 settings, -1 to make it a a strong 3 and +2 to make it a strong 4.... for me it's basically 2 clubs in the bag depending on the situation.
I bought the Epic driver when they were first available and it is by far the best driver I have ever hit. With that said I usually use a 3 wood that is based on my driver. I read the rave reviews on the Epic 3W and ordered one like my driver but with a slightly heavier shaft. It was a good choice but I will have to admit that it took me a while to get used to the added weight that the optifit hosel adds over my old Ping G20. Still have my G20 and the truth be told they both perform about the same but I would say the Epic has a slightly tighter ball pattern.
@JNG256 I had the Epic 3w for a few months but switched to the new Steelhead 3+ Prior to these I had the X2Hot 3 Deep and wore it out. The Epic is stout and a solid performer but I prefer the deeper face so I went to the Steelhead. One place where it outperforms the Epic for me is from the rough with the sole design. I get almost the same distance with a little higher trajectory. That just my 2 cents.
I'm not in search of a new 3 wood but that doesn't stop me from trying something new. I took one out for a demo round last week and it was AWESOME. So yeah I guess I am in search of a new 3 wood...that 3 wood. LOL
The Epic fairways are the best fairways I've ever played...and I've had all of them. For the first time ever I have absolutely no desire to try any other fairways. I highly doubt no matter what it released next year I won't be switching. I've hit some crazy amazing shots with these Epics.
