Started a long play by play for all of you guys unable to play. Got about half way through and accidentally wiped it out so here goes again. Won't be so detailed this time.
Weather a little cooler than forecast with light breeze. Eyes watered pretty heavily for first 6 or 7 holes from the cool breeze and ton of pollen in the air. Doubled bogeyed first hole of the day. Easy par 4 11th hole. Blocked drive to left behind tree. Chipped out. Bladed sand wedge over the green to hardpan. Chunked relatively easy chip shot. Chipped to 2'. Made the putt for double. Ugh. Parred next 4 holes which includes our version of Amen Corner. Long par 4 into the breeze. Made great chip over trap short right of green to 3'. Made putt for par. 220 yard par 3 with trailing breeze. Heavenwood to 36'. 2 putt par. Long par 4 into the wind. Blocked another drive left of cart path to hardpan. Good lie and had an opening. 3 wood to 33'. Birdie putt dove left at the hole. 6" par putt. Another par 3. 171 yards today. Choked down Heavenwood into the wind to 20'. Made par. Easy par 5 with the breeze. Blocked yet another drive into a tree but got a good break when ball bounced into the middle of the fairway. Hammered 3 wood to 82 yards, then bladed a choked down wedge over the green to soft ground with no grass. Chunked another easy pitch. Pitched back down the green 36' past the hole. Missed putt for bogey. Next hole is driveable par 4 (sometimes). Missed birdie putt. Last hole on the back nine is straight but narrow par 4. Blocked yet another drive left of fairway. Got cart path bounce to about 80 yards. Bladed pitching wedge off the hardpan over the green. Made stellar chip into the hill, bounce onto the green and drizzled down to 3'. Saved the par. First 8 holes, 6 pars, 2 doubles.
On to the front nine. 1st hole is little dog right. Decent drive, Choked down hybrid to left of green. Chipped to 8' below the hole. Missed par putt. 2nd hole is short (drivable for some) par 4, another dog right. Got a bad bounce under a tree with ball on wrong side for a lefty. Chipped out. Sand wedge just short of green. Missed the putt to save par. 3rd hole is easy par 5, but no driver off tee due to water. GIR but 3 putted from 51'. 4th hole is medium length par 3. 7 iron to 11'. Missed birdie putt. 5th hole is semi-short little dog left par 4, into the breeze today. Good drive in FW for a change. Knockdown 8 iron to 18'. Missed birdie putt. 6th hole is another semi-short dog right par 4. Good drive in FW. 9 iron to 21'. Missed birdie putt. 7th is par 3. Played 171 today with the breeze. 5 iron to 15'. Missed birdie putt. 8th is another par 5. Drive is a little right of FW into bunker. Chunked Hybrid, then hit poor Heavenwood that looked semi OK, but rolled back down a hill into edge of hazard. Didn't roll into the water, but I had very awkward stance and ball was in VERY long grass. Lob wedge just short of the green. Almost chipped in to save par, but it just wasn't that kind of day. 9th hole is another medium length par 4, but into the breeze. Decent drive. Poor swing on 8 iron into the bunker left short of the green. Out of bunker to 11' and missed putt to save par. 10th hole, my last of the day is 370 yard dog right par 4. Drive to left side of FW. Flushed 6 iron over the green down a little hill. Pitched 15' a little down hill past the hole. Missed putt for par.
As I am writing this, the round doesn't sound as bad as it felt while I was playing. I can't remember the last time I bladed so many pitching/sand wedges. That is usually a pretty good part of my game. Longest putt I made today was 4'. Just one of those days when virtually everything either rolled by or dove off right in front of the hole. I guess 10 over 81 wasn't totally awful in the circumstances. Had several good looks at birdie, but couldn't convert any of them. Did make 3 or 4 pretty good up and downs. Tomorrow is another day.
@RealOldLefty A 81 with all the bad breaks an missed wedges isn't nothing to be ashamed of. I know you expect better an will shoot it next time but sure beats working on this day lol
@RealOldLefty, I don't know about Albuquerque course conditions in mid April (I have always come out June - September) but here in Little Rock the fairway grass is starting to green up but it is far from being thick and lush like it will be in another month. Chipping and pitching conditions are still what I would consider tight lies which makes it harder than when the ball is supported with a little grass underneath. I consider myself a fairly good bunker player but when I blade one it's because I got a little fast and did not have the proper rhythm of cocking my wrist and completing my back swing before I start my down swing.
@CarlT9704 Two of the three city courses have had greens aerated in the last two weeks and the third will be done beginning tomorrow. Fairways are starting to come out of winter hibernation. Some areas have enough grass now for decent chipping. Changing fast. Within next couple of weeks fringes within 30 feet or so of the greens will all be grown up enough to chip/pitch normally. The tight lies and hard ground will fade from memory until next winter.
