Since parting ways with his caddie Bones Phil has had 2 of his worst outings of the year. This brings up the topic of how important a good golfer caddie relationship is. Take the top 20 golfers in the world today with today's rules and think what would the list be like if the rules were different, like maybe NCAA rules where caddies are not allowed. Where do you think Jordan Speith, Dustin Johnson, Ricky Fowler and the likes be ranked if they had to lug their own 40 pound bag, read their own putts, rake their own sand traps, get their own yardages, etc.
Bones just needs to walk up and take the bag while Phil isnt looking. Give him a number and pretend nothing happened. I swear thats what I would do. What is Phil gonna do ? Fire him ? Phil doesnt look like Phil thats for sure....huge mistake ! Now man up and admit it.
@RickM- I just hope that Phil can get his game back on track. I have to ask, he has been so successful in the past, how driven is he now, is he putting in the practice and work still. Don't get me wrong, I think Phil is a great guy and golfer, I am just wanting to see him on top of the board at these majors. But maybe it is time to go to the Seniors tour.
I think caddies definitely make a difference with some players, especially when they let their bad play get the best of them. Rory needed a kick in the pants from his caddie JP at the British Open, then they parted ways right after. Spieth needs his caddie Mike to calm him down, but when he needed to think clearly at the British Open, he made the right choice with the unplayable lie call and went on to win the tournament.
Phil started to struggle before Bones left. Whether he left due to health issues (knee replacement) or they just decided it was time, Phil is going through a bad stretch where his iron play and chipping look to be a struggle. Hopefully he get it going for next season. He may even add a different caddie after having his brother on the bag these past few weeks.
Phil still has mad skills. He and Stricker still have IT even though their ages are up there. Phil over thinks stuff just like all of us. It bites him in the butt just like all of us. When you are a team like Phil and Bones were , the feel of everything is different. Its been mentioned above of who would falter without their caddie , Spieth , Phil and a lot of others. Given the amount of time left for Phil to play competitive golf , its time to admit this change didnt work and get back to normal. Bones is a huge part of Phil's success and Phil is a huge part of Bones' success. They need to get back together and make a strong run to the finish. They got another Major in them , I just know it.
