I moved my way thru the adjustable line of drivers, starting with the X2 Hot Pro. The 2014 Alpha was nice, but the stock Fubuki was too spinny. The 815 DBD came along and around the same time I finally found a shaft in the Fuji Speeder Pro 66 Tour Spec that has all the right numbers and feels good. I ended up going backwards and putting the shaft into my X2 Hot Pro head for most of this season after adding some cotton to deaden the noise. I worked hard and got my handicap down a couple strokes over the summer by hitting so many fairways. X2 Hot driver and 3W in my bag, I couldn't miss.
Recently I snagged the 816 DBD head. I've only played one round with it over Thanksgiving break... I was in places on a few holes at my club I've never played from before. I hit into the group in front of mine twice, well after I figured it was safe and saw their carts disappear. At least 20 yards ahead of my previous best drives. The Fuji shaft that feels and launches right, with the 816 DBD head that sends knuckleballs forever, is my current gamer. Unfortunately the PA weather isn't ideal for golf for a few more months, but I'm stoked to get back to it and compare the 816 DBD to the new line up this spring.
Anyone else gone along with the driver product line looking for "the one"?
Of all the clubs in my bag my driver is the one club that I update more than the others. I thought I had found "the one" way back when Calloway came out with the steel head Big Bertha War Bird driver which had a steelshaft. It replaced my Arnold Palmer persimmon head driver. That was way back in the mid 90's. Through the years I guess I have had drivers from Ping, Taylor Made and Calloway. I hit a XR16 with the Mit Kyokera Black TiNi50 in the light shaft and Trackman said I hit it 20 yards further than my Ping G30. I was in a hurry that day when the Calloway rep was working with me and felt that I did not hit my best drive with my Ping but it put a bug in my brain and I have been looking for a XR16 with that shaft combo on the used Calloway web site for months and have not seen one listed. Now the word on the street is that the BB Epic is coming out January 27,2017 and it is suppose to be the hottest driver on the market. I cannot wait to try it with the same shaft that I demoed with the XR16. I heard the price is 5 big ones but if I can add 20 to 25 yards over my current driver, money is no object.
I ordered a 10.5 GBB Epic with a UST Recoil 440 light shaft and it should be in my bag in a couple of weeks. I only gained 11 yards over my G30 but my ball dispersion was about half of the Ping. As a senior golfer I don't know how many rounds I got left in me but I hope this Epic will be the one. I traded in my G30 to off set the cost of the Epic and a friend of mine has loaned me his GBB driver with the Mit Kuro Kage Tini 50 shaft in an A flex. Truthfully for me my G30 was better but today was just the first day of using it. I can say I really liked the Epic way more than the GBB. To me they are worlds apart from one another. Can't wait to get the Epic !
