Recently I tested the new Odyssey O-Works Black 3T putter. Callaway sent me the club to test for the purposes of writing a review for the Callaway Community.
Test conditions: Round of golf at Olympia Fields, CC in Chicago. It was a 90 degree day with light winds. 8/21 date of total Solar eclipse. Greens were firm and fast to start, actually rolling at a 10. Greens softened up and were slightly slower at the end of the round.
Club Characteristics (1=Very poor, 10=Outstanding)
Loved the look of the putter. The black shaft was amazing and reduced the sun glare off the shaft. Loved the Profile of the putter from standing over the putt, It has clean and very streamlined lines. The most impressive feature had to have been the feel and feedback from the club. It took me about 2 holes to see how the ball responded off the club face, but wow it felt amazing.
Putter Performance (1=Very poor, 10=Outstanding)
|EASE OF ALIGNMENT compared to my current putter||10/10|
|QUALITY OF ROLL compared to my current putter||10/10|
|ACCURACY compared to current putter||10/10|
|SPEED CONTROL compared to current putter||10/10|
- The backside of the putter was very easy to use for lining up putts. I felt like I could not miss where I was aiming at. - Roll quality was fantastic. I never once felt a "hopping" of the golf ball. It came of the face clean and smooth and rolled smooth as well - I felt I was much more accurate with this putter than my Daily putter. I have played golf for over 20 years now and I have always used a Ping Anser style putter. This was the first Callaway/Odyssey putter I have used and was completely blown away at how accurate I felt I was putting. I also never felt any twisting of the head at contact with the ball. I knew if I missed a put it was because I had read the putt wrong. This seriously was one of the first times I actually felt comfortable over a 5 foot put and didn't feel like I was going to miss it. - Speed control was also great. With My current putter, I always have trouble judging speed of any distance put. As stated earlier, It took me a few holes to get used to the feel of the putter, but after that I could judge the distance of my long Lag putts much better.
Comments on Microhinge Technology:
For the past 20 years I have used a solid faced Anser style Ping putter. I have become accustomed to hearing a audible response when I hit a putt. I must say that the Microhinge insert was Phenomenal. There is no audible response, however, the feel off the club was comfortable. I never had a "Hoppy" or "skippy" putt. The ball felt pure off the face and rolled pure. I knew the misses I had were from Miss reads, not due to alignment and or contact off the face, unlike my current putter.
Very Nice design. Loved its looks Loved the Black shaft and lack of glare that a shaft usually produces Alignment guides were easy to use and provided a true directional experience. Feel and responsiveness off the face was phenomenal. Great instant feedback on speed. Roll quality off the face was also impressive. Loved the Weight of the club as well.
That the club doesn't belong to me ;-)
Summary of My Experience with the Putter
First I have to say I used it during the Illini Golf Classic at Olympia Fields Country Club. It was a four man Shamble and we placed first with Lowest Net Score. The putter that I tested was great. loved the weight and feel of the club in my hands. Addressing the ball was nice, the alignment aids provide a lot of help in lining up my puts. The feel and responsiveness of the ball of the club face was fantastic. Very, Very True roll off my putts. Was impressed with the looks of the putter, even had others in my foursome tell me how cool of a club it was. Thanks for letting me try this putter, I am a believer that there are great putters out there, other than Ping.
