I received my O works 7S RED putter 3 days ago. Really excited to have it, but getting used to the difference in head weight (or is that swing weight?) has been an issue so far. I immediately took the putter to my local putting green and putted with it for about an hour. The next day I took it out on the course but found that because the head weight is so different from my current putter (Odyssey 7H with Superstoke 3.0 grip) that I was leaving every putt short. After 6 holes I went back to my old putter.
I'll write a more complete review after I spend more time with it, but here is what I want the developer team to know:
the two weights in the sole are 10 grams. Why not offer a package of weights? 2,4,6,8,12 grams....or maybe every gram. The weights are removable...why have them removable if we cannot place other weights in there?
What's the swing weight on this putter? Nate and AJ just had an excellent show on custom fitting putters, and much of that discussion concerned swing weights of putters. Isn't it time for Callaway to list the swing weights of all of its putters?
the Red 7S came with a patent leather and embossed head cover with a magnet closure. Very nice the the magnet closure vibrates lose on the cart. I had to drive back most of a fairway to retrieve the head cover two times during a round, and finally just left it off...which exposes the putter to damage from other clubs. The Velcro closure is definitely much better.
I'm hoping I warm up to this putter...it has the potential but I'm on the fence right now. Thanks.
It takes a little time to get the feel of a new putter. Keep practicing with it and I'm sure you'll love it. As for the headcover that's kinda disappointing. A stronger magnet might work or a different headcover but the one that came with should be good enough.
Factory swingweight on a putter is kind of irrelevant. Everybody puts on a different grip and putter grips are every size and weight under the sun. Thick grips, thin grips, heavy grips, light grips, they all make a putter feel completely different no matter what weight the head is.
Thanks. I've not thought a lot about putter swing weight before. I just know there are putters I like and putters I don't. But the latest Fitting Room podcast was extensively about swing weights on putters. So I guess there is more to it.
After another round and some practice green I'm really happy with the 7S Red putter -- without the 20G of weight in the sole plate. I play medium/fast greens, and may over time try the weights again. I hope Callaway will offer graduated weights for this putter -- the weights screw in, so why not? Something else for them to sell that I'll buy ;-)
I recognize that putters are a very individualized stick -- others on this forum say the new putters are too light, so it's what we are used to. I like the putter, 20G lighter than it came.
I had not heard that. I did a search online and didn't find any that looked like they would fit. The Scotty Cameron Titleist putters have similar weights, but I don't know if they are interchangeable.
I had the same question about inserting different weights....I'm waiting to hear back from Callaway Customer Service on my question. The club repair guy at PGA Superstore (who supposedly used to work in the Taylor Made tour van on the Web.com tour) says we can order them from Odyssey. We'll see....
Putter length (or any club, for that matter) also has a significant impact on swing weight...the shorter, the heavier.
Relative to the headcover, I put a piece of the stick-on velcro you can buy at Home Depot on each side of the inside of headcover and that has solved the issue with the near useless magnetic closure for me.
