I have received my Black #7s which I ordered the hour that I saw a picture of the putter online. I had previously been using the O-Works #9 with the Micro Hinge Face. I LOVE the feel and sound of the Micro Hinge. It is definitely the right face for me, but the original O-Works putters were so "busy" with versa technology and red alignment lines. It was a bit too much for my eye. While I didn't love the look of it at address, I putted well and love the feel and distance control that I get from the Micro Hinge Face. I had even posted a few reviews asking Odyssey to come up with some less busy and more simple looking models with the Micro Hinge. (I'd like to think that they listened to just little me, but I am sure that they heard the same comment from a few others.)
I knew that I either wanted to continue with the #9 head OR to have a mallet with a little toe hang to it. So when I saw the #7 Mallet with a slant neck and some toe hang, black with simple white alignment lines, I immediately called callaway and ordered.
Here is my review after two days.
I still love the micro hinge face. More than any putter face it helps me to feel what is actually happening. All types of golf balls struck off of the center of the putter feel sweet and soft, but you can audibly hear and feel when you have hit a ball off center. It is probably not quite as soft as a feel as the White Hot RX putter face, but there is a lot more feedback. One thing that I do notice that is different with this model of putter with this face is that the putter makes a little bit of a musical tone when you hit the ball off center. My O Works #9 had more of a "clack" sound to it, this #7s actually has a little bit more metallic tone to it.
I LOVE the line in the center of the putter. This is what I imagine bisecting the ball as I hit my putts. This is also what I use to align the putter. Just in the first two days, I feel incredibly confident about my alignment with this putter. When I am confidently lined up, I really only concentrate on speed when I am over the ball. This putter frees me up to think about my speed and to control it very well.
I should also mention that the black shaft looks really cool. Darth Vader cool. That was a nice touch.
I certainly don't know how it will perform for you, but I very quickly became confident with my 3-5 footers, which is what makes the biggest difference for me. I was really surprised at how quickly I felt comfortable and could "see" my line and be confident with this putter.
I am personally very excited to be so comfortable so quickly with a putter. I really feel that this putter can certainly make a difference in my score.
I attended an "Aimpoint" seminar last week which taught me a new way to look at green reading. With this putter in hand afterward, I feel really confident that I will really see improvement quickly!
Odyssey did a very cool thing realeasing these putters, AND by doing it at a price point that is better than what some of the other major manufacturers are doing right now.
One thing that could have made it even cooler is to release a new putter cover with it. The one that comes with it certainly is cool and feels durable, but something new would have been fun.
Thanks for the review, I'm waiting for my black #7s right now. Funny thing is I asked customer service when I could expect delivery and they replied it would ship on the 4th. Just checked e-mail and it shipped today for delivery on the 4th so I am thrilled (would have been bummed knowing you already had yours and mine wasn't coming til next week ! ) Good luck with the aimpoint method' I'm sure many in the community would love to hear how that works for you.
It's been a while since I posted this review and attended the Aimpoint seminar. Here's the update...
First off, I am putting better than ever. I have never been so solid from 6 feet in as I am right now. This has nothing to do with aimpoint and everything to do with seeing my line a lot better with the #7s putter.
I am also putting much better from everywhere else too. My speed control is better than it has ever been. This has something to do with the putter and the fact that I have been practicing smarter since my aimpoint express class. But I am also reading greens far better.
I would not only recommend the #7s putter to anyone who is looking at this style of putter, but I'd also recommend that everyone take a look at aimpoint. I've always trusted my eyes to read greens, and often my eyes let me down. When you take a class from aimpoint, you will learn to feel the break as well as some ways of quantifying what you feel. I don't always feel it perfectly, and I am positive that there is no perfect method, but aimpoint express gives you a great tool that you can use to putt more confidently.
My scores are reflecting this. I am a lot more consistent. I'm not saying that I haven't hit bad putts, but I have yet to have a round since August where I can say that my putting cost me strokes. My putting game has definitely gone from being either a highlight or a liability, and now it seems that I am consistently solid.
I couldn't be happier with my #7s and with my Aimpoint Express.
