Recently I tested the new Steelhead XR Pro Irons. Callaway sent me the club to test for the purposes of writing a review for the Callaway Community.
Steelhead XR Pro Irons, 4-AW / Stiff
I tested on the range off grass 2 days, and off the mats one day. I also used them on coarse after it rained, so slightly damp, but not wet. Coarse was in decent but not great shape.
Club Characteristics (1=Very poor, 10=Outstanding)
These clubs have a very old school feel with a newer design. Overall I like the look of them a lot.
(1=Very poor, 10=Outstanding)
|DISTANCE compared to my current irons||9/10|
|FORGIVENESS compared to my current irons||4/10|
|CONTROL compared to my current irons||6/10|
|LAUNCH compared to my current irons||8/10|
These clubs weren't offset, and had stiff shafts. They played like very old school clubs. Not very forgiving, but when I did connect and hit the sweet spot I would say I got at least 15 extra yds out of each club compared to whats in my bag currently.
Distance. Again, when I really connected and got a hold of the ball I felt like I was gaining 10-20yds on each club.
In the configuration I had, stiff shaft, I would compare them to a poor mans blade. Not very forgiving clubs.
Summary of My Experience with the Club
I really liked these clubs overall. I wouldn't get a stiff shaft if I got them but other then that they played great. I also really like the black finish. I have a Callaway Milled MD3 Wedge and I like the way the black finish looks when it starts wearing away.
