Recently I tested the new Steelhead XR Pro Irons. Callaway sent me the club to test for the purposes of writing a review for the Callaway Community.
Steelhead XR Pro Irons, all irons/true temper 105/stiff
Test Location: Driving Range & On Couse Weather: Beautiful, 75 degrees and sunny
Club Characteristics (1=Very poor, 10=Outstanding)
These clubs are awesome!! They look amazing and sound/feel is just as good.
(1=Very poor, 10=Outstanding)
|DISTANCE compared to my current irons||9/10|
|FORGIVENESS compared to my current irons||8/10|
|CONTROL compared to my current irons||8/10|
|LAUNCH compared to my current irons||10/10|
The launch and trajectory is insanely good. They are LONG and pretty forgiving on off center hits. Noticeable distance on off center hits , they're still long.
Look, sound, feel, distance, launch
if any...just getting adjusted to the irons takes a little bit because of the difference between them and my irons. Had numerous shots long that felt like a flier just because these are so hot
Summary of My Experience with the Club
I loved these irons. hate to send them back. Never really liked the A wedge in most sets but this is a different story. This A wedge is a WEAPON!!! Overall I would say this...Im buying these irons, might try a different shaft just to test out but A+++++ from me, LONG, forgiving, and they look and sound better than ANY iron I've hit.
Thanks for the review. I've been waiting to get some real world feedback on these. As you and I are around the same handicap, question: what's the workability aspect like? I knew they'd probably feel a touch hot, but I'm interested in how much control there is there? Also, what ball were you playing? I "learned" the game on the X-14 and now play forged irons...I'm hoping these find the sweet spot between the two.
I would say this is the sweetspot between the two. I currently have cleveland irons in my bag, had some AP2 Titleist irons but couldnt ever get as comfortable with them as I am my Cleveland irons. I, Like you, became a golfer and played who knows how many years with the X14 irons. I bought them as a sophomore in high school, worked all summer for my uncle just to save up for them. They do have some of the X14 characteristics which brought back memories, haha. To answer the question on workability..I draw the ball with EVERYTHING so I didn't even try to move the ball left to right with any irons except 4 and 5 which I was able to do..but I took a lot off of my draw and played higher and straighter shots with these irons. When I actually swung the club 100% it was high and straight, when I took a little off I could move the ball more.
